Welcome to Kitulo National Park

Discover the Wonders of Kitulo National Park

Perched at approximately 2,600 meters above sea level and cradled between the dramatic Kipengere, Poroto, and Livingstone mountain ranges, Kitulo National Park is home to Tanzania’s most prominent montane grassland ecosystem. Revered locally as “The Garden of God,” Kitulo is a botanical marvel, recognized globally for its vibrant wildflower displays. This alpine plateau bursts into color during the rainy season—from late November to April—featuring over 350 species of vascular plants, including 45 species of terrestrial orchids.

Kitulo is the first national park in tropical Africa established primarily for plant conservation. It plays a vital ecological role as a watershed for the Great Ruaha River and shelters a wide variety of endemic flora. Alongside the famous orchids, visitors can find brilliant red-hot pokers, towering giant lobelias, proteas, aloes, lilies, geraniums, and aster daisies—over 30 of which are unique to southern Tanzania. The park is also a key destination for birdwatchers, offering a chance to spot rare and endemic species in a tranquil setting.

Although large mammals are limited, the expansive grasslands are occasionally grazed by mountain reedbuck and eland, adding a touch of wildlife to the floral scenery.

Located roughly 100 kilometers from Mbeya in southern Tanzania, Kitulo spans 413 square kilometers and is a haven for nature lovers, hikers, and researchers. Wildflowers are at their most dazzling between December and April, making it the best time for botanists. For those interested in trekking, the dry months from September to November provide clearer trails and mild conditions, while the colder season from June to August tends to be misty and chilly. Visitors typically base themselves in Mbeya town, where accommodation and amenities are readily available for exploring this high-altitude floral sanctuary.
